You will hear the phrase "A fair test" a lot when you are asked to do an experiment or even design an investigation. But what does it mean?
Designing a fair test is important when conducting a school lab investigation because it helps to ensure that the results obtained are reliable and accurate.
A fair test involves changing only one thing (variable) at a time while keeping all other things that could change the results of the experiment the same.
By designing and performing a fair test, you can write a clear conclusion about how the variable you changed (your Independent Variable) may have affected what you wanted to investigate.
A fair test is also known as a controlled experiment, which can be confusing when you must also think about your Control Variables!
Check out the video below about Fair Tests:
Conducting a fair test improves the accuracy of lab results by controlling for other factors that could affect the outcome of the experiment.
By changing only one variable at a time while keeping all the other conditions the same, any differences you can see in your tables and graphs are due to the variable being tested and not to other factors.
A fair test also allows lets you comnpare the different conditions you are studying, which helps to write your Conclusiuon section. this is especially important if you are designing your own investigation!
Overall, conducting a fair test is an important part of the scientific process and helps to ensure that the results obtained are valid and meaningful.
